The Problem is Corporations:
Their Purposes, Powers,
Wealth, Influence and ControlMultinational (and national) corporations possess more rights and have less accountability than you do. Since they are primarily and usually only concerned with the bottom line, some would say that is a problem for us all. Also a problem: they are the new colonial powers of our time. Too often, their interests are not our interests. Their power is restrained only by their wallets, and since theirs are fatter than yours, they usually get, in one form or another, what they want. Exxon, for example, has not paid dime one on the judgment levied because of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. They have appealed and appealed the appeals, dodging every step of the way. Even a judge has said the corporation is not playing by the rules, its appeals are delaying tactics, and is acting above the law, but the plain fact is that they are making more money on interest on that sum and soon those interest monies will match the judgment. The spill and its aftermath will have cost Exxon NOTHING. Is that right?

Global Dreams:
Imperial Corporations and the New World Order"By profiling five multinational players in detail (Ford, Philip Morris, Sony, Bertelsmann, and Citibank) and scores of others in less detail, they show how "one voice" in entertainment/culture, in working, and in finance leaves little room to explore the welfare of humankind.

One World, Ready or Not:
The Manic Logic of Global Capitalism"...Greider takes on the global industrial revolution, arguing that it may be a 'wondrous new machine' but that it is one with no one at the controls. From the Pacific Rim to eastern Europe, he documents the abuses of a rampant capitalism with compassion, wit, and perception."

Masters of Illusion:
The World Bank and the Poverty of Nations"The World Bank is a formidable institution dedicated to bringing economic growth to a poverty-stricken world. Catherine Caufield has introduced us not only to the grandeur of these hopes, but to the magnitude of the Bank's failure to achieve them. Richly documented and without the slightest trace of self-righteousness, she has written a powerful story of institutional blindness and inflexibility."

Corporations Are Gonna Get Your Mama:
Globalization and the Downsizing of the American
Dream"While Hollywood has replaced politics with silly diversions about alien invasions, many Americans face a tangible fear: the seemingly inexorable grip of corporate power over their lives. Wages have been dropping for twenty years. Income inequality that grew under Reagan and Bush has accelerated under Clinton. More and more people face an uncertain future as the land of opportunity' becomes a cynical and empty phrase for millions of Americans. This hard-hitting anthology offers an incisive overview of how corporations, long plunderers of the Third World, are unleashing "market forces" like a pack of rabid dogs attacking the American way of life."

The Case Against Free Trade: Gatt, Nafta and the Globalization of Corporate Power
(An Earth Island Press Book)
Ralph Nader and others argue against the major globalizing trade agreements of our time. Nader continues to be the man Americans trust most.. And watch out for MAI. It is the grandaddy agreement that gives more power to corporations than to nations. A great hands-off policy in favor of the multinationals.
