The Price of Gasoline/The Internal Combustion Engine
|
| Background (from Moveon.org) |
In the early months of the year 2000, the price of gasoline shot up to around $2.00/gallon.
There has been a lot of talk of relief from that price but not much done. Today's
word (4/7/00) is that by summer the price will have dropped to around $1.45/gallon.
The issue is not OPEC or the oil companies (though they are part of it); the issue
is that we are addicted to oil in increasing amounts (see all the SUVs) and the internal
combustion engine and its limited efficiency.
A message from Wes Boyd:
Automakers in Detroit could be making cars that get 40-70 miles per gallon,
including family cars and SUVs. If we were driving these cars, we could cut
our gas costs in half, not to mention clean up our air. Automakers overseas
are now ready to mass-produce cars that get up to 60 mpg - why can't
Detroit?
American car companies say that consumers don't care about fuel efficiency.
We need to set them straight. |
