Rain forests are disappearing at an alarming rate (214,000 acres/day). HUGE and
CRITICAL problem.
- They are the lungs of the planet, creating the oxygen essential to life.
- They are our drugstore, our source of medicines -- 70% of drugs used to fight
cancer come from rainforests but species are being lost at the rate of three/day.
- They stabilize climate, acting as a pressure pump to warm colder areas.
- Covering only 3.5% of the planet surface, they contain half of all life forms
on the planet, not mention more than 1,000 indigenous groups of people.
Value of one hectare of rainforest:
- $1,000 for clear-cut timber, once
- $148 for cattle grazing
- $6,800/year intact and sustainably harvested
Major threats: population incursions for slash and burn agriculture; commercial
exploitation for oil, minerals, timber.
When indigenous peoples are given title to rainforest land, the destruction stops.
