Awakening

It tends to begin with some form of distress. A felt sense of disomfort, dis-ease, or even pain. It can be started by an ending -- relationship, marriage, a job.Or maybe it begins with just waking up one morning and realizing you have been putting off a lot of the things you'd like to do and time's winged chariot is moving swiftly on in what suddenly seems to be one helluva hurry. Or maybe it comes as a suddenly blinding flash of light insight, a realization, this isn't it. Or maybe it begins with merely being bored, a lot. Or a sense of profound emptiness. Or you wake up some place one morning and realize you don't really remember how you got there and that's really scary. Or with a question, "How did I get to this place in my life?"

Something nudges you, gently or hard. And, as if you've been asleep, or unconscious, or hypnotized, you wake up . . . .

It really is a choice. It's already happening. And it happens to individuals every day: a shift in view, a shift in consciousness, a shift in understanding. It is our best hope for positive change and the best proof it can truly happen. Read all about it.

Awakening Earth:
Exploring the Evolution of Human Culture and Consciousness

by Duane Elgin

"AWAKENING EARTH" argues that we are now collectively poised for a major "species shift." If the first stages of human awakening involved separating ourselves from nature, developing our sense of autonomy as a species and discovering our ability for remaking the world, the next stages of evolution will require reintegratingourselves with nature, exploring our deep bonding with one another and with the cosmos and developing our capacity to act in harmony with the universe."

Challenging, thoughtful, original, well-documented, and plausibly hopeful. One of the best long-term futures books in many years! (Future Survey, Volume 15, Number 10, October 1993)

Flow:
The Psychology of Optimal Experience

by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

"You have heard about how a musician loses herself in her music, how a painter becomes one with the process of painting. In work, sport, conversation or hobby, you have experienced, yourself, the suspension of time, the freedom of complete absorption in activity. This is "flow," an experience that is at once demanding and rewarding--an experience that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates is one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences...."

Amazon.com Review

People enter a flow state when they are fully absorbed in activity during which they lose their sense of time and have feelings of great satisfaction. The author, a pioneer in this astonishing field of study, clearly explains the principles of "flow" and shows how it can be introduced into every level of life.

Awakening in Time:
The Journey from Codependence to Co-Creation

by Jacquelyn Small

"Small offers a four-point plan for spiritually healthy living, composed of meditation, inner work (exploration of issues holding one back), study, and service (finding one's place in the world). Guided imagery exercises offer the reader the way to practice what Small calls ``heartwork,'' rather than simply processing these ideas through the mind. Many will find Small's contribution to the literature of ``new paradigm'' psychology compassionate, provocative, practicable, and refreshingly unpretentious."

Mindfulness

by Ellen J. Langer

Ever wonder how people can be so stupid sometimes? This may help. How people become mindless, and how we can become mindful.

"Harvard psychology professor Langer seeks to dramatize the rigid conditions and mindsets that often produce a pervasive state of automatized stupidity . . . (and) proposes a life-enhancing alternative."
