The world for which the American educational system was created no longer exists. Many kids do not perceive the so-called rewards of learning in a fairly crazy world. Some argue the schools do not teach and the kids do not learn. Many people have many answers but only a few people see clearly or ask why.
"A child born today in the United Kingdom stands a ten times greater chance of being admitted to a mental hospital than to a university.... This can be taken as an indication that we are driving our children mad more effectively than we are genuinely educating them. Perhaps it is our way of educating them that is driving them mad."
R.D. Laing
The Politics of Experience
Ballantine, 1978
In April, 1998, all new teachers in the state of Massachusetts were required to take a proficiency examination of general knowledge. It was said a ninth grader should be able to pass it. Let's assume it was designed for high school graduates. After four years of college dedicated to teaching them how to teach, an astonishing 59% of prospective teachers failed the proficiency exam. That's roughly six out of every ten. It is no wonder that our educational system doesn't work.
